Paper-fibre foam: sustainable packaging alternative

Discover Topa’s sustainable paper fibre foam with 80% less CO2

We work hard every day to protect your products through the best packaging solutions. We also aim to provide you with peace of mind, which for us means using our knowledge and expertise to work with and for you to solve your packaging challenges.  An important current challenge is making packaging solutions more sustainable. In our search for alternatives, we came across paper-fibre foam*.

This product has an 80% lower carbon footprint than the most commonly used plastic foams. But in addition to a lower environmental impact, it has a number of other characteristics we are equally enthusiastic about. So enthusiastic, in fact, that we’re already using it in a packaging solution we have developed ourselves.

°Connex ECO en °Connex OVERWRAP: practice what you preach

On behalf of Topa Thermal, Topa Institute has tested the qualities of paper-fibre foam. Topa Thermal’s packaging is used primarily by pharmaceutical companies. The insulating qualities of the packaging are a very important element here. This is in order to prevent temperature fluctuations during transportation. Tests in our climate chambers have shown that this value is at least equal to the foam solutions we were using up until now. On the basis of these positive results, we developed a new version of cold chain packaging that we have added to our Connex range, the °Connex ECO.

Topa Thermal already received an award for the innovative °Connex OVERWRAP earlier this year. This product delivers the same performance as a normal insulated container, but is smaller and lighter with a larger capacity. It reduces CO2 emissions by 30% and freight costs by 40%, while allowing 25% more products to be shipped per aeroplane plate. With a loadable volume ratio of 55%, the °Connex OVERWRAP is a more sustainable alternative for the packaging and transportation of temperature-sensitive products.

More possibilities with paper-fibre foam

In addition to the lower environmental impact and the good insulating effect, the product has other positive characteristics too. It is lightweight, made from soft material, doesn’t scratch, resilient, shock-absorbing and easy to handle (cut and punch). Our Packaging Engineers have now developed a number of prototypes for shipping boxes with a paper-fibre foam filling, for example. But it can be used to create specific buffers around fragile items too.

The contours of your product are transferred exactly to the foam, resulting in protective packaging that fits perfectly. Of course we have also put our new products to the test and carried out various fall tests within our institute. If you think paper-fibre foam could offer a more sustainable solution for your products, please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss the possibilities.
